At around eight years old we lived on top of The Ship Hotel in the centre of town. Mum and Dad had a hair salon there and we slept in one of the rooms out the back. A pivotal childhood memory is captured in this painting: The startling moment when Mum’s hair was cut alarmingly short—a bold, almost reckless act that seemed to ripple with chaos and abandon. Through the eyes of a child, it felt like witnessing a loss of control, yet also a daring transformation. The work explores the tension between creativity and disruption, and the emotions that linger in the wake of such unforgettable moments.
